About the role

The Family Violence Counsellor will provide trauma-informed, 1:1 counselling to Aboriginal women, children, young people, and families impacted by family violence. Responsibilities include intake, risk assessments (MARAM), safety planning, and developing healing plans. The role involves regular client reviews, outreach support, and co-facilitating culturally safe group programs to foster healing and cultural reconnection. The Counsellor will maintain accurate case notes and apply VACCA’s therapeutic framework, ensuring all work is grounded in cultural healing and safety.

About You

Provide culturally safe and high-quality support to Aboriginal women, children, and young people impacted by family violence. Deliver therapeutic interventions using Cultural Therapeutic Ways, conduct risk assessments and safety planning, and engage clients in a flexible, client-led manner. Support clients through outreach, home visits, and transport, while preparing materials for therapeutic programs. Maintain accurate records, facilitate referrals, collaborate with professionals, and contribute to program evaluation and improvement.

  • Requirements:
  • A tertiary qualification in social work, psychology, family therapy or related discipline along with demonstrated experience
  • Current COVID-19 vaccination (including booster dose, as applicable), a Working with Children’s Check for a paid employee (or willingness to obtain) and a Victorian Driver Licence.
