We believe supporting culturally strong, safe and thriving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities begins with us.

Many of our roles are 'identified' or 'designated' positions. This means that under the Section 12 Special Measures of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010, they are only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Cultural Therapeutic Ways - our approach

Cultural Therapeutic Ways (CTW) guides the way that we work at VACCA. It provides an Aboriginal lens linking practice and outcomes. This means that we prioritise Aboriginal ways of doing while we determine what’s important to us.

CTW is defined by practice that brings together three pillars that are integrated into our day to day as we work towards self-determined outcomes. Combining culture, trauma-informed and self-determination theories with wisdom and lived experience from within VACCA is what forms our rich knowledge system.

As an integrated approach to the way that we work, CTW applies to everyone at VACCA, from the Board to Leadership to all staff. It is our commitment to strengthening and growing Aboriginal leadership, Aboriginal knowledge, and ensuring the health and wellbeing of our staff. This gives us the foundations to support our community to heal, protect and connect.

Aboriginal Employee Assistance Program

In addition to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) program for all staff, we offer an Aboriginal EAP provided by the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS).

This program recognises the unique challenges Aboriginal staff face when working in their own communities and provides the opportunity to facilitate healing and develop strategies in accordance with cultural safety and self-determination.

It can be accessed for a wide range of work-related and personal concerns.

Deadly Thinking Workshop

The Deadly Thinking Workshop provides culturally safe spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff to discuss mental health, cultural load, lateral violence and workplace issues through yarning circles, connection to Country, guided meditation, and activities promoting self-empowerment, open communication and sharing.

Leave Entitlements

VACCA offers leave entitlements to all staff that acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural understandings of family and community, including Sorry Business, Cultural/Ceremonial obligations, NAIDOC events and Special Leave for emotional/psychological wellbeing, alongside standard entitlements.

Mental Health First Aid Training

We offer Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Training to all staff which is culturally responsive and designed to empower staff with relevant first aid strategies to confidently support Aboriginal people who are experiencing a mental health issue and assist them with seeking appropriate professional help if needed.
