The Organisation

The Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency (VACCA) is an Aboriginal Community-Controlled organisation that supports and advocates for the Aboriginal Community and is the largest organisation of its kind in Australia. The VACCA team is committed to the organisation’s visions and values, passionately providing support, service and advocacy for our children and other vulnerable members of the community.

Our strength lies with our people.

About the program

Koorie FACES is a free, 7-week program for the parents and carers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people that strengthens their confidence and skills to raise strong, resilient families. Fun, culturally safe 3-hour sessions are run each week during the school term to heal through promoting strong self-identity, family values, and connection to culture and community. Delivered in small groups in an inclusive, non-judgmental space, an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander facilitator will support connection and work together with families on:

  • building knowledge and skills around cultural ways of raising young fullas
  • unpacking ideas relating to connection to culture, parenting and family values
  • creating a sense of belonging and community

Each, week, participants will yarn about a range of topics including understanding our past, being a safe and strong Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander parent/carer and family and connecting with and managing young fullas.

About your role in the program

The Koorie FACES Lead Facilitator will lead the delivery of culturally focused group parenting sessions to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, parents and carers and provide them with opportunities to strengthen their cultural knowledge and understanding about parenting. The Lead Facilitator, with support from a co-facilitator, is responsible for delivering high-quality group sessions and creating a safe space for families navigating complex challenges related to parenting and wellbeing.

The Lead Facilitator will report to the Program Manager and will liaise with program staff across VACCA to plan, promote and deliver group sessions over 7-week blocks during each school term. They will deliver the program across VACCA’s Dandenong, Frankston and Morwell locations and will manage operational requirements including referrals, enrolments and attendance, venue hire, catering, feedback collection and reporting.

How we work differently

Koorie FACES prioritises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parenting ways and understands that our families are strong and resilient when they are connected to their family, culture, kin, Community and Country. Parents, carers and families come together in this program to connect through yarning circles, share stories, heal and pass on these learnings to young fullas. This practice approach is embedded in our group parenting programs.
