About the role

Link Up Victoria assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, 18 years and over, living in Victoria or Tasmania who have been removed, fostered, adopted or placed in an institution. Link Up undertakes research, connecting clients to family and Mob and completes reunions across Australia for eligible clients. The role of the support officer will be to provide one on one, trauma informed support to our clients – Stolen Generations survivors – on their journey to find and be reconnected to their family, culture and traditional country.

In your role you will assist our clients to apply for their adoption or foster records, relevant birth, death and marriage certificates and any other records from record holders all over Australia. These records will be used by you to confirm Aboriginal connections, traditional country, location of living family and loved ones who have passed, and research family trees. Your role is also to support Stolen generations survivors with understanding their records, handing over and sharing their records with them in a culturally safe and trauma informed way. Once all family research is completed your role will be to work with the Reunions Officer to prepare your client for their reunion.

About You

  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding for the values that underpin VACCA’s vision and purpose
  • Awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal people in contemporary Australia and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal people
  • Demonstrated understanding in working with Aboriginal families and children
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a clear, culturally appropriate and respectful way with a range of stakeholders including staff, Government and agency partners and clients
  • High-level written and computer use ability, including demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Excel and PowerPoint
  • High level organisational skills including time management and the ability to work as an effective team member
  • Commitment and willingness to work closely with our clients and their family to support them in an empathic and respectful way Capacity to work independently and to meet deadlines set
  • Ability to travel throughout Victoria and interstate and undertake overnight stopovers and work flexible hours
  • Willingness to learn on the job
  • Requirements: Valid Police Check, a Victorian Working with Children’s Check for a paid employee (or willingness to obtain) and a Victorian Driver Licence. Current COVID-19 vaccination (Strongly Recommended).
