About the role

Reporting to the Executive Legal Advisor: Law Reform Projects, and working alongside the In-house Legal Service team of lawyers, the Senior Policy Advisor will be responsible for supporting the planning and implementation of law reform projects at VACCA including new information-sharing provisions under the Youth Justice Act that apply to proceedings in the Criminal Division of the Children’s Court of Victoria involving the following:

  • Developing guidance and resources for VACCA to operationalize the new information sharing function
  • Facilitating the operations of the new function using developed frameworks
  • Assessing and managing requests for information under the new provisions, including the development of high-quality written responses and guidance
  • Supporting VACCA staff to manage requests for information under these provisions and build knowledge and capacity within the workforces.
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with key stakeholders to facilitate a partnership approach .

About You

  • Demonstrated awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal societies and cultures, and commitment to continually build knowledge of such, along with a high level of awareness of the key issues that impact Aboriginal communities.
  • Experience in Child Protection, Youth Justice or information sharing work in Victoria
  • Experience or knowledge of relevant inquiries, case law or law reform in relation to issues impacting Aboriginal people in Australia and/or Victoria
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality written materials addressing a range of issues for different audiences or purposes including the development of  training materials .
  • Experience in project management or policy development and implementation and related change management.

Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, social work, criminology, public policy, or a related discipline
  • Valid Police Check, a Victorian Working with Children’s Check for a paid employee (or willingness to obtain) and a Victorian Driver Licence. Current COVID-19 vaccination (Strongly Recommended)
