About the role

The Education Supports for Children in Care (ESCC) Tutor will provide Education supports to Aboriginal children and young people in care by utilising a culturally informed and trauma-informed approach and ensure to best support young people to reengage with, attend and thrive in their chosen education setting and address gaps in learning with a focus on literacy and numeracy development.

ESCC Tutors will be responsible for providing one-on-one educational assistance and tutoring, advising schools on individual learning needs, and supporting Individual Education Plan, Cultural Support ensures a culturally safe environment and offers additional support to foster learning.

The Tutor will work closely with the ESCC Coordinator to assist with attendance and participation at Student Support Groups (SSG) and ensuring a holistic care-team approach for the young person. The Tutor will engage with the young person to collaborate and undertake assessments, together with the school to measure the individual’s performance and outcomes to ensure we achieve the educational objectives and outcomes for the ESCC pilot program.

About You

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the values that underpin VACCA’ vision and purpose
  • Demonstrated awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal societies and cultures, and commitment to continually build knowledge of such, along with a high level of awareness of the challenges or barriers within the education system
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement individualised educational plans.
  • Ability to tailor and develop worksheets, workplans and utilisation of educational resources to respond to learning needs
  • Experience engaging with education stakeholders and school supports, collaborating to achieve individual student goals and improve literacy and numeracy
  • Experience working with young people or children exhibiting challenging behaviours, or school disengagement
  • Strong understanding of the education support systems available to young people living in residential care settings and an understanding of strengths-based, trauma informed and therapeutic practice
  • Ability to advocate for service intervention and client supports
  • Experience working with individuals and groups and identifying underlying issues, working with conflict, assisting people to communicate safely and effectively, working collaboratively with other services and supports
  • Requirements: A qualified teacher, with a minimum of 2 years classroom experience with children in primary and/or secondary schooling setting, valid Police Check, a Working with Children’s Check for a paid employee (or willingness to obtain) and a Victorian Driver Licence. Current COVID-19 vaccination (Strongly Recommended)
