The Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency (VACCA) is an Aboriginal Community-Controlled organisation that supports and advocates for the Aboriginal Community and is the largest organisation of its kind in Australia. The VACCA team is committed to the organisation’s visions and values, passionately providing support, service and advocacy for our children and other vulnerable members of the community.

About the role

VACCA’s Early Help program is integrated within the family support services and this service is available to all children and families in our community and provide a culturally safe place for families who are vulnerable to participate in activities with their children alongside strong Aboriginal Community members.

They also provide a supportive place of mentoring and peer support. The Early Help program is a part of a collaborative, place based model with a focus on: intentional based learning and play; facilitating positive parent-child interactions and parental skill development; supporting child development, school readiness and ; developing cultural knowledge and identity of children and families; participation of Elders, Community members and artists to develop strong connections to culture and Community; providing information about services including maternal child health; linking in with partnership programs such as Tweedle.

About You

  • Demonstrated awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal societies and cultures, and commitment to continually build knowledge of such, along with a high level of awareness of the key issues which impact upon Aboriginal communities 
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and the ability to effectively communicate with Aboriginal people
  • An ability to work in a culturally respectful, trauma informed manner with Aboriginal children, their families and communities to ensure that cultural connections are fostered and maintained 
  • An understanding of developmental milestones across the years 
  • Ability to build parental confidence and competence to respond positively to parenting challenges 
  • An ability to work effectively with Aboriginal organisations, government departments and community service organisations
  • Well-developed case management skills including assessment, case planning and risk assessment.
  • Experience or formal Qualification in children services, early childhood education, community services and social work are desirable. It is expected that applicants be willing to undertake a Diploma or other relevant training in the course of their role, this would be supported and facilitated by VACCA
  • Requirements: Valid Police Check, a Victorian Working with Children’s Check for a paid employee (or willingness to obtain) and a Victorian Driver Licence. Current COVID-19 vaccination (Strongly Recommended)
